Dr Darlene Boakye (pronounced “Bo-ah-chee”) is a Specialist Physician and Nephrologist committed to delivering purpose-driven, patient-centred care. Her approach to medicine is grounded not only in clinical excellence, but in a deep sense of responsibility to improve long-term health outcomes and expand access to specialist care in South Africa.

Dr Boakye obtained her undergraduate medical degree from the University of Cape Town in 2012. She completed her internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, followed by community service at Mthatha General Hospital—serving the very community in which she was raised. This formative experience shaped her commitment to equitable healthcare and continues to influence her practice today.

Her career in Internal Medicine began in 2016 at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth. She later completed her registrar training at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, where she also obtained her Master of Medicine (MMed). Her research focused on outcomes in patients with hypertensive heart disease and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction—conditions that remain highly prevalent in South Africa. During this time, she successfully completed the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa examinations in Internal Medicine, earned a Diploma in HIV Management, and served as Chief Registrar in 2022.

Dr Boakye qualified as a Specialist Physician in 2021 and completed her subspecialty training in Nephrology in 2026. She is a recipient of the Discovery Subspecialist Award. Her clinical and academic interests include hypertension, chronic kidney disease, kidney health in pregnancy, and improving maternal–fetal outcomes in women with renal disease

In March 2026, Dr Boakye established her own practice at Rondebosch Medical Centre, where she consults as a Specialist Physician and Nephrologist. Her practice reflects her philosophy of purpose-driven medicine—combining evidence-based medicine, thoughtful clinical judgement, and a holistic understanding of each patient’s journey.
